Three of the other girls of the saloon stood in a line across the narrow second floor balcony, blocking her way to the stairs. They all stared at her, eyes glittering in the gaslight of the lamps.

"Where you off to, Glory?" Anne asked. She ran her tongue over her lips.

"Step aside," Glory said, trying to keep her voice even. She adjusted her grip on the handle of her worn carpetbag and shifted her gaze from one girl to the other as the warm glow of Ohanzee surrounded her. Her voice still shook, however, because she was starting to learn there were some things Ohanzee had no power to protect her from. "I'm taking my leave of this place."

"But, Glory," Laura moaned. "We don't want you to go. We could have such fun together." She parted her lips and Glory shivered at the sight of Laura's pointed teeth.

"I know what you all are," Glory stammered. "I won't let you make me into one of you."

All three girls took a step toward her and Glory backed away. She had moved past the door to Laura's room now and was backing along the second floor balcony. Her room was the third door behind her, but that would provide little protection. She needed to get off the balcony or else she'd be trapped; the girls were herding her toward the wall just beyond Hazel's door.

"Oh, but Glory, it feels so good," Carmen said. "You can't begin to imagine the power."

With one more step back, Glory decided on a course of action. She made a quick move toward the balcony as if she were going to throw herself over the railing. The three girls flew toward the railing, moving faster than Glory could track. Seconds later, the three realized she had duped them and swung around, hissing. Carmen crouched on the narrow balcony railing, mouth open wide to display her pointed teeth, and Glory turned away to fumble at Beatrice's door. Her sweaty palms slipped around the smooth knob, unable to find a purchase.

She could feel the strengthening pulse of Ohanzee's spirit around her and knew the girls were approaching, moving slowly, toying with her like a barn cat would torture a mouse. The doorknob finally caught and she pushed into the room, turning to slam the door shut.

"What the fuck you doing?" a man shouted from the bed in the corner of the room.

Glory didn't even glance in that direction. She grabbed a straight-backed chair and wedged it beneath the knob, then picked up her bag and turned toward the window.

"Glory!" Beatrice cried, "What the blazes are you on about?"

Glory turned her head to look at Beatrice where the girl sat astride her man's hips. Both were nude, Beatrice's full breasts hanging low, nipples large and dark in the low lamplight. Glory looked away, moving fast to the window. It was like the window in her room, secured in the middle of the frame with a rod that allowed it to pivot, the top coming into the room and the bottom pushing out.
